Taranto, historically also called Tarent in English, is a coastal city in Apulia, Southern Italy. It is the capital of the province of Taranto, serving as an important commercial port as well as the main base of the Italian navy. With a population of 185,112 as of 2026, Taranto is the second-largest city in Apulia.
As you explore Taranto, you'll be surrounded by ancient Greek and Roman ruins, including the famous Aragonese Castle and the ancient city walls. You can also take a stroll through the picturesque old town, with its narrow streets and colorful houses, or visit the impressive Taranto National Archaeological Museum, which houses artifacts from as far back as the Neolithic period.
Taranto is also a great destination for foodies, with its fresh seafood, homemade pasta, and locally grown produce. Don't miss out on trying the famous Taranto mussel soup, or the region's traditional orecchiette pasta with tomato sauce and ricotta cheese.
