Lausanne is the capital and largest city of the Swiss French-speaking canton of Vaud, in Switzerland. The Olympic capital, it is a hilly city situated on the shores of Lake Geneva, about halfway between the Jura Mountains and the Alps, and facing the French town of Évian-les-Bains across the lake. Lausanne is 51.7 kilometres northeast of Geneva, the nearest major city. The Federal Supreme Court of Switzerland convenes in Lausanne, although it is not the de jure capital of the nation.
As you stroll through the narrow streets of Lausanne's old town, you'll feel like you've stepped back in time. The winding cobblestone streets are lined with historic buildings and quaint cafes, giving the area a cozy and intimate feel. Take a stroll through the Place de la Palud, a bustling square that is home to the iconic clock tower and the Château Saint-Maire, a stunning Gothic-style building that now serves as the seat of the cantonal government.
If you're a fan of art and culture, you'll find plenty to love in Lausanne. The city is home to a number of world-class museums, including the Musée de l'Elysée, which showcases contemporary photography, and the Olympic Museum, which celebrates the history of the Olympic Games. And speaking of the Olympics, Lausanne is also home to the International Olympic Committee headquarters, making it a must-visit destination for sports enthusiasts.
