Ouro Preto, formerly Vila Rica, is a municipality in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. The city, a former colonial mining town located in the Serra do Espinhaço mountains, was designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO due to its Baroque colonial architecture. Ouro Preto used to be the capital of Minas Gerais from 1720 until the foundation of Belo Horizonte in 1897.
As you wander through the cobblestone streets of Ouro Preto, you'll feel like you've stepped back in time. The town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it's easy to see why. The colonial architecture is beautifully preserved, and the pastel-colored buildings make for a picturesque backdrop.
One of the highlights of Ouro Preto is its many churches. The most famous is the Church of Saint Francis of Assisi, which boasts stunning baroque artwork and a gilded interior. But there are many other churches to explore, each with its own unique style and history.
