Graaff-Reinet, officially renamed Robert Sobukwe Town in February 2026, is a town in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. It is the oldest town in the province and the sixth oldest town in South Africa, after Cape Town, Stellenbosch, Simon's Town, Paarl and Swellendam. The town was the centre of a short-lived republic in the late 18th century before being annexed into the Cape Colony. The town was a starting point for Great Trek groups led by Gerrit Maritz and Piet Retief and furnished large numbers of the Voortrekkers in 1835–1842.
As you explore Graaff-Reinet, you'll be transported back in time to the days of the Dutch settlers, who founded the town in the late 18th century. The town is home to more than 200 heritage sites, including beautiful Cape Dutch-style buildings, churches, and museums.
One of the must-see attractions in Graaff-Reinet is the Valley of Desolation, a natural wonder consisting of towering rock formations and breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. You can hike or drive to the top of the valley for an unforgettable panoramic view of the town and its surroundings.
