Kirkenes, known as Girkonjárga in Northern Sami and Kirkkoniemi in Kven, is a town in Sør-Varanger Municipality in Finnmark county, in the far northeastern part of Norway. The town lies on a peninsula along the Bøkfjorden, an arm of the large Varangerfjorden, and is located just a few kilometres from the Norway–Russia border.
Located in the very northeast of Norway, Kirkenes is a small town with a population of just over 3,500 people. Despite its small size, this town is a hub for both tourism and industry due to its strategic location near the Russian border and Arctic Ocean.
One of the main attractions in Kirkenes is the chance to see the Northern Lights. With its location above the Arctic Circle, Kirkenes is one of the best places in the world to witness this natural phenomenon. You can book a tour to go out into the wilderness with a guide who will help you spot the lights and provide interesting information about the science behind them.
