Duino is today a seaside resort on the northern Adriatic coast. It is a hamlet of Duino-Aurisina, a municipality (comune) of the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region of northeastern Italy. The settlement, picturesquely situated on the steep Karst cliffs of the Gulf of Trieste, is known for Duino Castle, immortalized by the poet Rainer Maria Rilke in his Duino Elegies.
One of the most striking features of Duino is its stunning coastline, which stretches for kilometers along the Adriatic Sea. The crystal-clear waters and rugged cliffs create a breathtaking backdrop for swimming, sunbathing, and exploring. If YOU are feeling adventurous, take a hike along the coastline to discover hidden coves and sea caves that are only accessible on foot.
Duino is also home to the famous Duino Castle, a magnificent fortress that dates back to the 14th century. The castle has a fascinating history, having been occupied by various rulers and armies throughout the centuries. Today, it is a popular tourist attraction that offers guided tours and is open to the public.
